When I retired in 2003, a friend suggested I take classes here at Stagebridge. After taking singing, acting and storytelling classes, I focused on storytelling and writing.
In 2015, I published my memoir, A Good Run, which captures a coming-of-age narrative of the Black experience from the Great Migration to the Civil Rights Movement.
During my book talks, I found myself translating my love of storytelling with new people and audiences. In the process, I reinvented myself and now perform under the stage name, Brother Ben. After participating in my classes, performances and our former EPIC Storytelling program, I’m proud to be an active member in our Stagebridge community.
So, it was a great honor and privilege for me to have the opportunity to teach the course Straight Outta Oakland at the West Oakland Senior Center this year. Highlighted by my knowledge and personal experience with the rich culture of West Oakland, the classes that I took over the years at Stagebridge prepared me to teach this course. It was a match made in heaven.
Teaching during the pandemic was a challenge; however, our showcase was the perfect example of why it is so important to provide performing arts opportunities to underserved communities. Untold stories containing the unique history of people and places need to be shared, recognized, and honored.
For me, life can be very good when one finds a passion to pursue in retirement. It’s even better when you can uplift that passion in others.
