BEGINNING ACTING

Have fun learning basic acting. Students will work on monologues, theater games and scene work. Final class will be an invited-audience presentation of acting work in class. Josiah is a noted writer/director/producer and award winning stage and screen actor. He has taught theatre at colleges and community organizations. |

PLAYWRITING

“As imagination brings forth the forms of things unknown, the poet’s pen turns them to shapes and gives to airy nothing a local habitation and a name.” -Shakespeare. Learn the techniques of writing your very own play for the stage: characters, dialogue, plot, structure. Students who continue through spring have their work acted and read by actors in a final staged reading presentation.

Cirque du Soleil and Pickle Family Circus veteran Jeff Raz will teach some basics of clowning, the fundamentals of funny. Focusing on partnerships, students will learn classic routines, some cool moves and some really silly tricks. Jeff will also throw in some circus history and antidotes from his 35 years on stage and in the ring. |

Playback Theatre transforms personal stories told by audience members into theatre pieces on the spot using movement, ritual, music and spoken improvisation. Roni is director of the New Beginnings Playback Theatre Company at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. |

STAGEBRIDGE FALL 2008 FEE SCHEDULE

Class size is limited. To guarantee your space please pre-register.
Daytime Classes
$95/one class ($6.80/class)
$160/two classes ($80/each) ($5.70/class) This rate is for all except Musical Theatre.
$225/three classes ($75/each) ($5.35/class) This rate is for all except Musical Theatre.
Musical Theatre Class
$95 + $40 materials fee (covers cost of music and renting a theatre).
NOTE : Class runs 12 sessions September 15 – December 1.
Evening Classes
Shakespeare/Clowning $140 or $75/each part
This fee is to help cover the costs of having top professional artists in the classroom.
We are committed to keeping class fees reasonable, particularly for many of you on fixed incomes. We very much want you to be able to participate to the fullest extent. At the same time, we have to start more closely balancing the cost of the class for us with the fees that we charge you. We have to increase our fees slightly to begin covering our costs. In the past, we have spent more money on classes than we take in from fees.
The average cost of our classes to you is: $6/class or $85/semester
The average cost to us is: $25/class or $350/semester (based on 17 students)
We are only charging 25% of the cost of the class. If you are so inclined and able to, please make a donation to help cover the actual cost of the class.
Scholarships/Work Study
We want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to take classes. Should you need a partial scholarship please see the instructor. We have limited grant funds available to assist students who are in need. We ask that in return you agree to a work study plan to volunteer to help out in the office or backstage.
STAGEBRIDGE THEATRE COMPANY
The nationally acclaimed theatre company of older adults based in Oakland, California celebrates its 30th season as the nation's oldest senior theatre company. Since 1978, the company's mission has been to narrow the gap between the generations and to present positive images of older adults through the medium of theatre arts classes, workshops, healthy aging programs and public performances. The actors range in age from 50-90+ years. The non-profit, intergenerational company has performed over 30 original plays for more than 300,000 people in clubs, senior centers, hospitals, schools and theatres. A pioneer in the field of healthy aging, Stagebridge created the award winning Healthy Aging Program called “See Me!” to train medical professionals to see older adults as people. Stagebridge is also the only West Coast representative of the innovative TimeSlips ™ a creative storytelling method that helps people with dementia . Another first is our summer Performing Arts Camp for adults 50+. Stagebridge has been featured on ABC-TV, CNN, National Public Radio, in Modern Maturity, Oakland Magazine, Storytelling Magazine and at national and regional conferences .
All classes and workshops are held at the First Congregational Church of Oakland, located at 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland (at the corner of 27th and Harrison Streets). Plenty of free parking, wheelchair accessible, and close to the 19th Street BART station.
